Allen on Oliver: ‘He can run with any wide receiver’

This offseason, Falcons players and coaches have often discussed their point-of-attack tapes, which are areas of emphasis for each member of the team to work to improve.

Coaches are there to help point out flaws in a player’s game and help them develop in those areas, but part of the reason Quinn has been so impressed with his team’s attitude this offseason is that the players, themselves, have taken that job as their own.

When the players had come back, a number of them already had some ideas and begun work on the things that they wanted to address and wanted to improve upon. And over those nine or ten weeks, they really put work in on one to two things in their game that they wanted to address. All of us have many things [we want to address] but there was a couple that would be really specific. And then over those nine weeks, how did we keep track of them, how did we go and stay with it? So, those were a few of the things, when you’re already a good player and you’re trying to take it to a new spot, it can be really challenging.

You’ve got to dig hard as hell to find the answers and get to the truth and what is good and what you need to improve on, Quinn said. There’s a number of players on our team that went for it in the biggest way, and coaches as well. That’s why I’m so excited about this group.

Today’s Early Bird Report includes a pair of Falcons who landed on a recent ranking of the top players over 30 as well as Bucs defensive end William Gholston’s thoughts on his poor play last season.

A lot of attention is paid to the youthful talent the Falcons boast, especially on defense, but they have some of the game’s top veterans as well. In a recent piece for CBS Sports, Sean Wagner-McGough ranked his 30 best NFL players over 30 years old. The Falcons had two players land right in the middle of this list.

Will Giants Olivier Vernon continue to kneel during national anthem after NFL passes rule to appease Donald Trump?

I can’t play basketball for s—. My ability to not play basketball is way more crazy than someone’s ability to play basketball. I can dribble, but that’s just about it. Sometimes people call me out just to see me shoot the basketball and play around because they know how terrible I am.

I wish I had hair, man. I wish I had hair going down my back! But, hey, you can’t have it all; you know God is very fair.

I can’t just go to a gym by myself. I can’t say I’m going to do this and do that. I would do a couple reps and then just leave. I need to be pushed.

Every single day, every play, knowing that people are depending on me to make my play that helps me elevate my game to another level.

Leadership and production. No. 2, he plays a core position. If you’re playing the Mike linebacker role, you’re commanding the huddle, you’re leading the huddle. Production matters, but also the fact that we feel like he’s built to last. We feel that he meets the height, weight, speed parameters that we want in the role, but he is now the guy that leads the huddle.

That’s a big hole to fill now with Brian Cushing gone. So, we are expecting big things from a leadership standpoint and perhaps now he’s ready to do that.

Now that the business side of things is taken care of, McKinney can focus on football and helping his team get back to the postseason after it endured a 4-12 campaign in 2017.

MLB trade rumors: Mets’ Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard are available… for a ‘boatload’ of talent

Despite winning their last two games, the New York Mets sit at 30-38, 10.5 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East.

The Mets’ goal is to get younger, more athletic. Reliever Jeurys Familia, a potential free agent, is a strong candidate to be dealt if he proves he is sufficiently recovered from a sore right shoulder, which sidelined him from June 8 until Sunday, when he allowed one run in one inning in his return against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Quality relievers always are in demand at the deadline, and the Mets will be motivated to move Familia — they almost certainly would not make him a qualifying offer.

So obviously another difficult (roster) decision, but one we felt like covers us and makes the most sense for us right now.

Boone said Torreyes took the news well. Torreyes rejoined the Yankees on June 9 after being optioned on May 26 with a.339 average, but appeared in just two games during his second big-league stint and was 0 for 3.

We were trying to work out something to where we didn’t have to do it, Boone said. He took the news like a pro and he wanted to know where Scranton was right away so he could get going.

As for Gardner, he was encouraged after waking up Monday morning feeling much better.

I woke up in the middle of the night Saturday night and Sunday morning (sore), he said. I never had any leg issues or knee issues before, so it was kind of alarming for me. So I went to get an MRI to get a good look at it to see what we’re dealing with.

Ex-NFL player Kellen Winslow Jr. arrested on suspicion of rape, kidnapping

Former Pro Bowl tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. has been arrested for the second time in eight days.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Winslow was taken into custody Thursday on suspicion of multiple sex-related crimes, including two counts of forcible rape.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Winslow also will be charged with kidnapping with the intent to commit rape, residential burglary and indecent exposure when he is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

The state legislature overwhelmingly passed a bill that authorizes New Jersey casinos and racetracks to offer betting on sports games and the governor signed it after a U.S. Supreme Court decision cleared the way.

They don’t need a vacation right now; they need a little break from the push we’ve been in right here, but like our guys shared with our other guys, a few days and let’s get back at it, Carroll said. It’s too important that we stay on task. They’ve worked so hard to get where they are, you don’t want to have to go back down conditioning-wise then work it back up. They’ve just invested too much at this point.

Plenty of coaches have suggested this offseason that they wish they had more control over their players in the offseason. But Carroll will just have to accept that the players are on their own until training camp opens.

I take us over anybody, Adams told The Post on Tuesday at the start of the three-day mandatory minicamp. I believe in us, man, simple as that. I believe in us in that room. We work hard.

2018 MLB All-Star Game voting update: Astros sparkplug Jose Altuve leads all vote-getters

Astros second baseman and sparkplug Jose Altuve is the leading vote-getter in updated AL All-Star fan balloting ( via MLB.com ), totaling 1,572,101 votes.

Altuve holds a slight edge over Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts (1,568,417) for the most among all major-leaguers. First baseman Freddie Freeman, putting up MVP-type numbers for the resurgent Braves, leads the updated NL balloting ( via MLB.com ) with 1,433,140 votes.

It should be pointed out that some of these cases never got off the ground. The Manhattan District Attorney later dropped all charges against Mauldin. All of the charges in Anderson’s first arrest were dropped, as were most of the charges from his second arrest. He still faces traffic violations. Linebacker Darron Lee also was involved in an incident last June at a concert when a video showed him yelling at a woman and having to be restrained by teammate Leonard Williams. No charges were ever pressed.

Oh yeah, I’ll play at some point if I’m feeling good, obviously I’ll go out there, Graham said. But when the time comes, we’ll sit down and talk and decide what we’re going to do.

Graham was also asked about returning to the Eagles and said he loved his time with the team during a special year, but doesn’t know if that will be a possibility.

I will continue to work as much as the treatment process will allow, and as they know, when I am not in the office, I will be in constant communication with Pat [Shurmur], Kevin [Abrams] and the rest of our staff, said Gettleman, referring to the new head coach and the assistant general manager.

I am thankful to John Mara and Steve Tisch and our organization for their support and encouragement, and to Ronnie Barnes for his guidance and assistance, Gettleman said. And, of course, to my wife Joanne and our children for their love and support.

Lincoln Park doesn’t get the credit it should, he added.

Despite his passion for tennis, before he hit the courts Schonbraun had a job delivering The Jersey Journal — in the days when it was an afternoon newspaper.

There were other newspapers like the Hudson Dispatch and Bayonne Times, he said. But the Jersey Journal was the paper in Hudson County.

Orange Lawn offers a handful of different types of paid memberships, one of which, the full family membership, allows full access to all facilities and services such as heated swimming pools and tennis courts, cafés with lunch and dinner, and locker rooms.

The club also offers a children’s summer camp as well as a venue for weddings and other major celebrations.

Pederson indicated it had more to do with scheduling than a lack of desire.

I don’t think it’s an every year thing, Pederson said. But I think last year was great for us, it was a great change-up for us to go against Miami. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out. Teams are already booked, teams are already full, teams are doing other things. For us it’s just: get better as a team.

The Eagles will still get their Super Bowl LII rematch against the Patriots, though, in a pre-season game up in New England on Aug. 16.

Last year, of the Eagles’ decision to conduct a joint practice with the Dolphins, center Jason Kelce said it’s always good, in my opinion, to break up the monotony. You get to go up against different guys who play differently, have different moves. Even though it’s a similar defense to our own, it’s always good to see some different players, see some different styles. And it was really just fun to play football.

NBA free agency: Sixers preparing for LeBron James with these moves by Brett Brown?

Pete Prisco doesn’t seem to share the admiration NFL players have for the Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and cornerback Darius Slay.

Last week, Stafford checked in at No. 31 on the NFL Network’s top 100 players for 2018, rankings that are determined by voting from NFL players. Slay, entering his sixth NFL season, cracked the top 100 for the first time, at No. 49.

Also making Prisco’s list are Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown (Central Michigan) at No. 5, Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell (Michigan State) at No. 19, former Lions and current Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh at No. 51, Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham (Detroit Crockett, Michigan) at No. 54, and San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Joe Staley (Central Michigan) at No. 85.

Hackenberg, who overhauled his throwing motion this offseason, sure looks like a bust.

The Raiders are sticking with EJ Manuel and Connor Cook as the understudies to Derek Carr.

Hackenberg was a member of the Raiders for exactly three weeks. He didn’t even make it out of spring practices with them, despite Raiders coach Jon Gruden speaking highly of Hackenberg during the 2016 pre-draft process, when Gruden was an ESPN analyst.

The Jets this offseason waived quarterback Bryce Petty (now with the Dolphins) before trading (effectively cutting) Hackenberg.

As a second-year safety, Landon Collins was named a First Team All-Pro in 2016. In his three years in the NFL, he has made two Pro Bowls and recorded 341 tackles, 28 pass deflections and eight interceptions.

Donald Trump cancels Eagles’ White House celebration a day before the visit

A small contingent from the Philadelphia Eagles were scheduled to visit the White House to celebrate the team’s Super Bowl victory, but Donald Trump canceled the visit Monday.

Trump’s thoughts on the national anthem weren’t necessarily the only reason players weren’t planning to attend. Jenkins talked about changes in our criminal justice system,Smith said that Trump has no respect for women, and Long called the visit a photo op.Most Eagles players hadn’t said whether or not they’d attend.

Smith, who now plays for the Panthers, tweeted that Trump’s statement included so many lies.He added:

A year ago, just half of the Patriots’ 68 players attended the White House in 2017. The group that did plan to go for the Eagles was reportedly a small one:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that a large group of Eagles players had decided not to attend, including most — if not all — of the black players.

The president called off the Eagles’ planned 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue victory lap after he learned fewer than 10 players were expected to attend. Previous NFL appearances have included entire 53-man rosters plus a complement of coaches and executives. Many of the Eagles players objected to Trump’s oft-stated position that it’s disrespectful and outrageous for millionaire athletes to kneel or sit while the Anthem is played before games.

Now, just like he did with their invitation to The White House, Trump has once again changed his mind, tweeting that staying in the locker room is still disrespecting the national anthem and flag.

The Eagles have been one of the most outspoken teams in the league regarding protests during anthem, especially safety Malcolm Jenkins, who was not planning on attending the ceremony on Tuesday.

There is so much that has been swirling around that administration, safety Malcolm Jenkins said, I don’t see it as beneficial at this moment in time to visit in a celebratory fashion.

Other teams are playing, he said.

The only real question: Who would go deep for the Yankees?

It was Aaron Judge, hitting a tiebreaking drive in the eighth inning that sent the Yankees over the Mets 4-3 Saturday night for their sixth straight victory in the all-New York matchup.

Obviously, our team hits a lot of balls into the seats, winning pitcher David Robertson said.

The Mets have dropped 10 straight at Citi Field, their worst drought at home since losing a team-record 15 in a row at Shea Stadium in 2002, the Elias Sports Bureau said. Hall of Famer Mike Piazza was a member of that club, and he threw out the first ball in this game.

The Philadelphia Eagles Football Team was invited to the White House. Unfortunately, only a small number of players decided to come, and we canceled the event. Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Sorry!

We will proudly be playing the National Anthem and other wonderful music celebrating our Country today at 3 P.M., The White House, with the United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus. Honoring America! NFL, no escaping to Locker Rooms!

The White House fueled the fire in a statement released Tuesday, saying the Eagles decided to abandon their fans when only 81 members of the organizaton said they would attend.

Singles by Guillermo Heredia and Daniel Vogelbach helped the Mariners take a 2-0 lead in the third inning off Rays starter Wilmer Font.

Mitch Haniger drove in one of the Mariners’ two runs off Rays reliever Matt Andriese with a single in the fifth, pushing Seattle’s lead to 4-0. It was Haniger’s 47th RBI of the season, tying a career high.

Arroyo’s first home run got the Rays on the board and Cron got them within one with his 14th.

Steven Wright and five relievers combined for Boston’s fifth shutout of the year.

The Red Sox have scored only 10 runs in their last five games, but perceive that to be nothing more than a mini-slump.

We’re getting guys on, we’re just not getting that hit with guys in scoring position, Holt said. That’ll turn.

Xander Bogaerts led off the 12th with a single against Mychal Givens (0-3), and the Red Sox loaded the bases before Holt broke the scoreless deadlock with a fly to center. Bradley followed with a fly ball to score Rafael Devers, who had doubled.

You don’t want to fall below .500 now, but you know there is still a lot of time to get things going and make runs like teams have already done, catcher Chris Iannetta said.

Marte’s home run gave him 10 straight hits for extra bases, which tied a club record. His sixth-inning single ended the streak.

I never think about it, Marte said. After the game somebody told me.

We were excited about the prospect of getting him back in a few days, but like we said before, we can’t let these injuries stop us from doing what we need to do, Callaway said. We have other major league players that can step up and get the job done, and that’s what we need to do.

Cespedes, a two-time All-Star, is batting .255 with eight homers and 28 RBIs this season. He was limited by leg injuries to 81 games last season and has had trouble staying on the field for the Mets since he signed a $110 million, four-year contract in November 2016.

I think that when he initially went on the disabled list, it was to knock this completely out so he can come back and be the healthy player he wants to be. I think as this continues to move forward and if it continues to drag on that there has to be a level of understanding of things you’re talking about, like, it may be something that you battle throughout the rest of your career, Callaway said. But I don’t think we’re at that place yet. So I think that the goal is still to get him to where he can go out there and feel normal.

General manager Sandy Alderson has called Cespedes’ condition somewhat chronic, and already there has been talk about the outfielder moving to first base at some point to preserve his legs.

I think first and foremost we’re trying to get a healthy left fielder back, and then maybe we can consider other options after that, Callaway said.
